Work placements

Academic work placements are a training activity that aims to enable students to apply and complement the knowledge acquired in their academic training.

Work placements encourage the acquisition of skills that prepare them for professional activities, facilitate employability and promote entrepreneurship.

They can be carried out in companies, institutions and public or private entities at national and international level. They can also be undertaken at USC centres. Work placements are carried out in accordance with an educational collaboration agreement, so there is no employment relationship with the collaborating entity where they are carried out.

In the Degree in Biology, the work placement is a fourth year subject, of a compulsory nature of 4.5 credits (1 ECTS is equivalent to 25 hours of work placement). To pursue this, the student must have passed the first two years and 70% of the third (recommended requirements in the Biology Degree Report) or have passed a minimum of 162 credits.

There are two calls for external work placements: the first in May-July of the academic year prior to the work placement; and a second in January-February of the current year.

Once the work placement has been completed, the student must hand in this Satisfaction Survey on the practical works received, to their academic tutor, along with the Work Placement Report

The syllabus for the Degree in Biotechnology establishes carrying out an external work placement for a total of 4.5 ECTS.

Work placements will be carried out in companies or public and private entities, related to the various fields of biotechnology (research and development, pharmaceuticals, health, industry, environmental management, food and agriculture, etc.). They can also be carried out at collaborating entities or at USC research centres.
