History

Through the regulation of the Royal Decree of 30 March 1849, Higher Normal Schools were established in the capitals of university districts. Thus, the Higher Normal School for Teachers of the University of Santiago de Compostela was born, the predecessor of the present Faculty of Education Science, was created.

It was located in the old St. Xerome's school building. The Normal School for Teachers was created in Santiago, by virtue of a Royal Order of 6 December 1930. Shortly afterwards, with the arrival of the Second Republic, the aforementioned Professional Plan appeared, under a coeducational regime.

From 1945 onwards, the centres were renamed Teacher Training Colleges: López Ferreiro for male teachers and Isabel la Católica for female teachers. Reunification took place in 1964. The integration of the Normal Schools into the University took place with the arrival of the General Law on Education (1970). In this way the University School of Teacher Training for Primary Education was created in Santiago de Compostela.

In the 1973-74 academic year, the teaching of Philosophy and Educational Science at the University of Compostela was recognised. Shortly afterwards, in 1975, the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Science was created, in which the departments of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology were integrated. New faculties emerged from the segregation of the former Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Science.

By Decree 384/1996, of 17 October (Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) of 5 November), the University School of Teacher Training for Primary Education on the Santiago Campus was abolished as such and integrated into the structure of the new Faculty of Education. However, the problem continued to the present day from the physical point of view: North Campus for the degrees in teacher training and South Campus for the rest of the degrees.

Integration into a single building, which overcomes current limitations, is presented as a major challenge for the teaching of the new degrees.
