Comprehensive waste management.

The Waste Management Unit deals with the treatment of hazardous waste from teaching and research activities carried out at the USC.

It also promotes environmental actions aimed at preserving the environment and increasing the quality of life at the USC.

  • Biohazardous waste is waste contaminated with biological substances. This group includes:

    • Microbiological cultures and contaminated instruments (Petri dishes, liquid extracts...).
    • Waste from infectious animals.
    • Blood and blood products.
    • Material contaminated with blood and body fluids (gloves, gauze, etc.).
    • Anatomical waste.
    • Needles, lancets, scalpel blades and sharp and/or cutting material.
    • Small contaminated or broken glassware (pipettes, slides, coverslips).
    • Cytostatics and objects contaminated with these products.

This waste should be placed in rigid plastic containers with tight-fitting lids.

  • This group of waste requires a specific treatment, recovery or disposal process according to its physical or chemical characteristics.

  • These are non-inoculated and non-infected animals. Otherwise they should be treated as biohazardous waste.

These animals shall be deposited in the freezers of the centres, where they will be collected periodically by the Waste Management Unit.

  • The types of containers for waste collection that can be requested are:

    •  30 litre plastic jerry cans.
    •  Containers for biohazardous products (black).
    •  60-litre mobile lid (blue).

When requesting waste collection you must indicate how many new containers you want and what type they are.
