The Smoking and Addictive Disorders Unit provides cognitive-behavioural assistance in the field of addictions (tobacco, pathological gambling, cannabis, cocaine...) and the comorbidity associated with these disorders (depression, anxiety...).
The Smoking and Addictive Disorders Unit of the Faculty of Psychology of the USC has its origins in 1984, when Professor Elisardo Becoña began to treat smokers with different psychological techniques. This led to the "Stop Smoking Programme", which became a national and international benchmark in cognitive-behavioural psychological treatment to stop smoking.
Over the years, treatments were extended to other addictions (e.g. pathological gambling, cannabis, cocaine, etc.) and to the comorbidity associated with these disorders (e.g. depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, etc.).
During its almost 40 years of experience, a large number of people have been treated (more than 15,000 smokers), many professionals have been trained, research of great scientific impact has been carried out, reports and studies have been produced for different administrations (local, regional and national) and the Unit has participated in regional, national and European research projects.
