The Master’s Degree in Art and Cultural Heritage Management promoted by the University of Santiago de Compostela is an academic proposal with the priority objective of giving continuity at postgraduate level to the studies of History, Art History and Geography taught at the Faculty of Geography and History of the USC. This proposal derives directly from the profound reform of the Bachelor’s Degree in History of Art of the Faculty of Geography and History, which was carried out in the academic year 2022/23, and which will begin to be implemented in the academic year 2024/25.
The main academic rationale for this new degree is based on the growing demand for graduates in the humanities, and specifically in History of Art, who want to improve their training. These students would have access to a profile of professional studies in art and heritage management, valid for research through at the same time.
As far as scientific interest is concerned, the new master’s degree will confirm the deep-rootedness and importance of studies oriented towards the different artistic manifestations and heritage, as they have been included in the study plan of the degree in History of Art, a degree, it is important to remember, that is unique in Galicia.
The professional and social interest of the new degree is demonstrated by the versatile and varied training offered. Fields such as museology, exhibition curatorship, art criticism, art market consultancy, collection management, coordination of artistic and cultural projects, musealisation of archaeological sites, conservation and restoration consultancy, reports for cataloguing and protection of cultural assets, multidisciplinary teams to intervene in rehabilitation and master plans, interpretation and dissemination of heritage or cultural tourism, will benefit from the training provided to future graduates.

The master’s degree in ‘Art and Cultural Heritage Management’ includes two specialities entitled ‘Conception and development of artistic and cultural projects’ and ‘Planning and strategies for intervention in cultural heritage’. Each of the specialisations consists of 21 ECTS credits, divided into subjects of 3 and 4.5 credits. The six subjects that make up each of these specialisations are classroom-based and optional.
However, the master’s degree in ‘Art and Cultural Heritage Management’ can also be taken without a mention, combining subjects from both specialities until the required number of credits is reached.

  • The main objective of this master's degree is to prepare students for professional practice in the field of Art and Cultural Heritage Management, as well as access to research in the field of Art History. Derived from this framework, the following general objectives are established for the degree:
    1. To understand the complexity and aspects of specialisation in the Management of Art and Cultural Heritage, and how this impacts on today’s society, both from a cultural perspective and in its interrelation with the economy.
    2. To cover the updated contents in History of Art and Culture and the new research methodologies that affect them.
    3. To provide students with the knowledge, competences and techniques, as well as the attitudes and skills, that will enable them to work in the field of art and cultural heritage management.
    4. To enable students to move from the prevailing paradigm of economic development based on exploitation and extractive industries towards a more sustainable idea of production which, without forgetting the economic needs of the people, takes more into account the symbolic values and the current potential of the Cultural Industries, Heritage Management and Cultural Tourism, all of which are references for the transformation of the models of the EU’s European Horizon.
    5. To understand the inherent diversity of art, heritage and culture in the past and in the dynamics of the present.
Teaching objectives of the mentions and specialities
Training objectives ‘‘Speciality in Conception and Development of Artistic and Cultural Projects’’:

    2. To enable students to transfer theoretical knowledge to the practical level by means of different tools specific to the discipline of art history: research, writing, curating, dissemination, etc.
    3. To experiment with the conception, planning, development and execution of a complete curatorial project, both on a theoretical level and, in certain cases, on a practical level.
    4. To contextualise one’s own artistic and cultural projects and those of others in the social, cultural, political and economic ecosystem.
    5. To provide students with the confidence in their abilities to interact with the professional fabric, as well as the awareness that their training will continue to progress, once they have completed their Master’s studies, through experience in the work field.
Training objectives “Speciality in Planning and Strategies for Cultural Heritage Intervention”:
    1. To introduce students to an advanced and critical reflection on the situation and the main debates surrounding cultural heritage.
    2. To enable students to respond to the needs of conservation and promotion of cultural heritage in all its typologies and variants.
    3. To experiment with the conception, planning, development and execution of an integral project in heritage management.
    4. To prepare students to formulate and develop research projects specifically related to cultural heritage.
    5. To provide students with the confidence in their abilities to interact with the professional world, as well as the awareness that their training will continue to progress, once they have completed their Master’s studies, through experience in the work field.

  • Mobility
