• Ability to decide the proper protected area category for a given area and to delineate its limits.
• Ability to implement protected area zoning.
• Ability to list the uses allowed in a protected area.
• Ability to design, lead, prepare, apply and interpret conservation projects and plans (natural resources plan, management and use plan, etc.).Theories:
1. Introduction. History of the conservation of protected natural areas. Origin and values associated to different protected area types.
2. Protected areas: types, objectives and designations at an international level. Protected natural areas in Spain and Galicia. Protected areas networks. Legal tools for planning: PORN and PRUG.
3. Principles of protected areas management. Management of populations and ecosystem management. Objectives and strategies for management. Systematic conservation planning: concepts, principles and implementation. Uncertainty and adaptive management.

1. Introduction to systematic conservation planning: software and applications.
2. Methods and workflow for designing and zoning protected areas with the software MARXAN.
3. Case study I: Design of a network of Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPAs).

Lecture-explanation: teaching procedure by which the lecturer will present the concepts and/or procedures, providing basic information necessary for understanding the theoretical perspectives or practical procedures, to promote student participation.
