• To train professionals to develop research-critical thinking, experimental design abilities and improve their communication and collaborative skills.
• To provide theoretical and practical training in cellular, molecular biology and genetics techniques, and their application to the study of human diseases with special emphasis on genomics and proteomics.
• To provide an advance knowledge on cellular, molecular and genetic basis of the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of human disease.
• To qualify students to develop professional tasks in the fields of biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry, in which a PhD or specialist degree is not required.
• To provide the student with a broad, solid and homogeneous basis for future studies in biomedical research PhD programs such as Endocrinology and Molecular Medicine PhD programs of the University of Santiago de Compostela.
Incretins. Obesity therapy: new pharmacological treatment modalities for obesity . Surgical treatment of obesity. Etiopathogenesis of diabetes type 1. Etiopathogenesis of diabetes type 2. Surgical treatment of obesity and diabetes. Calcium receptor related pathologies. Thyroid nodules and cancer. Clinical and molecular basis of familial lipodystrophies. Aging and adipose tissue.
Endocrinology and metabolism chapters of recently updated editions of Internal Medicine or Endocrinology books. Analysis and discussion of research papers.
The main objective of the subject is to define concept, affected population and “PROVEN” molecular and celular mechanisms involved in the most common human endocrine disorders, with the purpose of providing the student with:
-Knowledge of endocrine and metabolic diseases, which constitute a major public health problem due to its high prevalence and chronic nature.
-Ability to distinguish theoretical hypothesis based on studies in animal and other experimental models from real causes of human disorders. Hence student should be capable to discriminate between key biomedical research contributions to diagnosis, prevention and treatment of any endrocrine disease and irrelevant studies due to lack of clinical applicability in humans (“translational medicine”).
-Ability to develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research in the field of endometabolic disease studies
Regarding the methodology, will be considered 3 possible scenarios (Scenario 1. Adapted normality: no restrictions on physical attendance. Scenario 2. Distance: partial restrictions on physical attendance. Scenario 3. Closure of the facilities. Impossibility of classroom teaching. "As established in the government agreement of June 19, 2020, which regulates the bases for the development of safe teaching in the academic year 2020-2021".
Virtual teaching sessions will be developed through the Microsoft Teams program. The didactic material will be uploaded to the platform, and forums for interaction with teachers will be created through the virtual classroom of the USC, so that students can consult their doubts and establish better communication with teachers about the available content of the subject, taking into account the 3 scenarios.
Through email, you can always request tutorials if the student requires or needs it.
Likewise, the participation of the tasks carried out through telematics applications will be monitored.
Continuous assessment:
-30% assistance and participation in seminars and master classes, considering the 3 scenarios.
-70% oral presentation or essay of one the topics covered in the course program.
During the course of the subject, the students will be asked to choose a topic for individual or team presentation
-Regular attendance to master classes and interactive seminars as well as consulting recommended bibliography.
-Make use of the thutories and online course resources to solve doubts.
