1. Study of the English language and its standard varieties, its spelling, lexis and specific phraseology, with special emphasis on its use in journalistic and audiovisual production.
2. Study of the English language in its spoken and written form. Terminology for the expression of ideas and content.
3. Application and use of the English language in journalistic and audiovisual practices, contexts and techniques.

- Note: some transversal topics will be dealt with, such as gender roles in advertising, the influence of mass media on body image, etc. Some of the subtopics above are relevant in more than one unit, for example, photography appears in newspapers as well as in magazines, advertising, etc.
B. PRACTICAL CONTENTS
Practice of the 4 skills:
Writing (General writing skills, with a focus on style and punctuation, particularly between various print media and advertising. The students will learn writing skills in order to communicate effectively in English)
Reading (The students will regularly read articles and learn how to analyse and summarise them effectively)
Listening (Development of listening skills and comprehension using radio, podcasts, TV, etc.)
Speaking (The students will regularly participate in class discussions and debates.
Only English will be spoken in class, so the students can become familiar with the language and become comfortable using it constantly.)
Furthermore, the students will become familiar with new vocabulary in order to describe and discuss newspapers (both tabloids and broadsheets), magazines, radio, TV, film, news and current affairs, etc. both in oral and written expression.appears in newspapers as well as in magazines, advertising, etc.
Type of tasks:
Analysis of different media
Reading and oral/written discussion of texts of articles in different print media such as newspapers (the Sun, the Daily Mirror, or the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian), or on websites, to illustrate how the different papers approach the same story (both individually and in groups)

CON.1 - Analyse the interweaving of audiovisual communication in the context of cultural industries.
CON.5 – Get to know the techniques and technologies of documentation, ideation and creation specific to audiovisual language.
CON.7 – Get to know the different methodologies for analysing any radio, film, television, or multimedia product.
HAB.1 - Transmit in an appropriate manner audiovisual content aimed at specialised and non-specialised audiences.
HAB.2 - Manage audiovisual documentation and writing techniques.
HAB.5 - Analyse, using different methodologies, any radio, film, television, or multimedia product.
COM.1 - Design and implement effective audiovisual communication strategies in different media, supports and contexts.
COM.4 - Apply different methodologies to the analysis, criticism, and historiography of any audiovisual or multimedia work.
COM.7 - Apply the knowledge and skills acquired in a professional and ethical manner in the field of Communication, taking democratic principles and values and the Sustainable Development Goals as a reference point.

A. FIRST CHANCE
- A test (ON THE OFFICAL EXAM DATES) with theory (grammar and vocabulary), listening, and reading comprehension exercises (50%).
- Practical exercises: oral production (25%) and writing production (25%). Total: (50%)
B. SECOND OPPORTUNITY, REPEATING STUDENTS AND STUDENTS WITH OFFICIAL CLASS WAIVER
Single evaluation system: 100% exam. The exam will be held on the official dates and will consist of:
- A test with theory (grammar and vocabulary), listening, and reading comprehension exercises (50%).
- Two practical exercises: oral production (25%) and written production (25%). Total: (50%
WARNINGS:
-The vehicular language will be English. The correct use of the English language will be taken into account in the evaluation.
- Academic misconduct (plagiarism, cheating in exams etc.) will be penalized. As for plagiarism, the following should be taken into account: In case of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the “Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dous estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións” will apply:
“A realización fraudulenta dalgún exercicio ou proba exixida na avaliación dunha materia implicará a cualificación de suspenso na convocatoria correspondente, con independencia do proceso disciplinario que se poida seguir contra ou alumno infractor.
Considerase fraudulenta, entre outras, a realización de traballos plaxiados ou obtidos de fontes accesibles ao público sen reelaboración ou reinterpretación e sen citas aos autores e dás fontes”.
- The evaluation system contemplates that it is essential to have passed both the theoretical and practical parts in order to pass the subject.
- According to the rules of permanence in force in the USC for undergraduate and Master students (art. 5.2), the mere attendance, as well as the participation in any of the activities carried out in the interactive classes, will be subject to evaluation and, therefore, the final grade of the student who completes them will not on any account be “not presented”.
