A technology licensing agreement typically includes the following points:
- Upfront payment: A one-off payment made by the company once the contract is signed, which in some cases may be associated with a milestone in the development of the technology.
- Royalties: A percentage is established which, once applied to the annual sales that the company makes of the products that include the licensed technology, will represent an annual payment.
- The use of the licensed technology for research uses by the USC is included.
The benefits obtained from the marketing of the technology are distributed in accordance with the Regulations for the Protection, Exploitation and Participation of Research Results Generated at the University of Santiago de Compostela:

Thus, in many cases, this income generates resources that make it possible to continue the research lines of the groups or to open new lines of work.
Sometimes, the team that generated the technology is interested in exploiting it by creating a spin-off to which the technology can be licensed, and which will be responsible for carrying out the marketing tasks.
