Metrology and quantum sensors

This subject provides the student with the fundamental aspects of quantum metrology and its different physical technologies for use and application in measurement problems and sensors. Different highly promising technologies such as photonics, solid state and superconductivity are addressed, as well as more complex systems and applications such as optical clocks, quantum neural networks, etc.

The students who take this subject will acquire knowledge corresponding to the following items of the degree report:

CON_05: Have knowledge of quantum information theory, universal limitations, and its implications for computing, communications, and metrology.

CON_07: Have knowledge of quantum optics and the role and properties of light and its manipulation in information processing and quantum communications.

-Quantum optical metrology: photonic detection and homodyne and heterodyne detection.
-Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometry beyond the classical limit in phase resolution.
-NOON states for subdiffractive lithography and microscopy.
-Optical interferometry with compressed states and multiparameter interferometry in MZ.
-Introduction to quantum imaging.
-Estimation of parameters. Fisher metric, Heisenberg (LH) and Cramer Rao limits, …
-Solid state quantum metrology and superconductivity: Nitrogen-Vacancy centers, Hall Effect, SQUIDs, …
-Systems and Applications: Optical clock systems (Ion+Local-Oscillator+Optical-comb), photonic neural network systems, etc.

The students who take this subject will reinforce the habits of critical and creative thinking, communication skills and collaborative work skills that are indicated in the title verification report (HD0,HD1,HD2,HD3). Likewise, the basic (CB1-CB5), general (CG1-CG4) and transversal (CT1-CT8) competencies that are indicated in said title verification report will be worked on. Finally, the students will acquire in the specific competences of this subject:

CE3 - Understanding and knowledge of the fundamentals of Quantum Information Theory, as well as the basic aspects of the four types of quantum technologies: computing, communications, metrology, simulation.

Teaching will be taught by professors from the USC (60%) and UVigo (40%)

Both an expository and an interactive methodology will be used, the first being predominant in the theoretical classes and the second in the practices. The case study and/or the student's autonomous work will be used to carry out the evaluable works.

There will be a virtual platform where essential and supplementary training material will be made accessible.
For tutorials it is advisable to make an appointment.

In accordance with the margins established in the title report, the evaluation system will combine:
1.- Final or partial exams 30%
2.- Continuous evaluation 20%
3.- Carrying out work 30%
4.- Oral presentation and defense of the same 20%

For cases of fraudulent completion of exercises or tests, the USC "Regulations for evaluating student academic performance and grade review" will apply.

Theoretical classes: 15 hours (9 taught by USC and 6 by UVigo)
