Biochemistry II

- To study the processes responsible for the maintenance of genetic information and its regulation.

- To know the main techniques used in molecular biology to understand the latest scientific advances.

- To know the main metabolic pathways and their relationship to some diseases. Get an integrated view of metabolism and its regulation.

Programme of lectures:
The lectures will take place in 30 sessions of one hour each.

Item 4. Carbohydrate metabolism and its regulation.

Item 5. Lipid metabolism and its regulation.

Item 6. Metabolism of amino acids and related molecules.

Item 7. Integration and regulation of metabolism.

Interactive class schedule:

The lectures are supplemented by 12 hours of interactive classes, grouped into six sessions of 2 hours each. The students will discuss and resolve questions and problems related to the subject, to be worked on previously. This material will be available either on the website of the course or will be provided by the teacher.

Program of practical lessons:

Laboratory practical classes will be held in 3 sessions of 4 hours and a test at the end of them.

Practice 1. Transformation of E. coli with recombinant plasmid DNA.
Practice 2. Identification of colonies of E. coli with recombinant plasmid
Practice 3. Digestion of a plasmid with restriction enzymes. Separation and quantification of DNA fragments in agarose gels.

A) Large Group Lectures: Lesson taught by the teacher in which the theoretical contents of the subject are presented. The USC virtual platform will serve as a support and complement to theoretical teaching.


B) Small Group Interactive Classes: Theoretical/practical class in which applications of theory, problems, exercises are proposed and solved. The student actively participates in these classes in different ways: delivery of exercises to the teacher, resolution of exercises in the classroom, etc. Written evidence on specific sections is included. Attendance at these interactive classes is mandatory for continuous evaluation.


C) Very small group tutoring: Tutoring scheduled by the teacher. Activities are proposed such as monitoring the degree of learning and understanding of the subject, clarifying doubts about theory or practices, problems, exercises, readings or other proposed tasks.


D) Practical laboratory classes: The student acquires the skills of a laboratory and consolidates the knowledge acquired in the theory classes. For these practices, the student will have a hyphen. The student will perform all the practices individually, or in small groups, collecting in the script the results that proceed, presenting them to the teacher at the end of each session. Attendance in these practical classes is mandatory.


E) USC virtual platform as a support and complement to theoretical-practical teaching and as an important element of communication with the student. It will make available to students the theoretical and practical resources necessary for the study of the subject.

1. The two calls for evaluation in the academic year will consist of three parts: theoretical exam, laboratory practical part and interactive part.

2. The theoretical exam will account for 70% of the final grade (maximum 7 points). The exam will be mixed, with multiple choice questions covering all the fundamental parts of the subject, and short and concrete questions, for evaluating the development of reasoning and the assimilation of the subject. The student must demonstrate a minimum level of understanding in all the different areas covered. It is necessary that the mark obtained in this test exceed 45% (3.2) of the maximum (7) to assess the remaining sections.

3. The evaluation of the laboratory practical part will be 10% (up 1 point) of the final grade. This assessment will include the work done by the student in the laboratory as well as the understanding of experimental results, as assessed through a written test consisting of short questions.
Assistance to all of the practical sessions and the final written test is mandatory to pass the subject of Biochemistry II.
The marks for the practical laboratory part will be maintained only during the two following academic years in the case of failing the course.

4. Evaluation of interactive classes will be 20% (up to 2 points) of the final grade. This assessment will be established taking into account: active participation in these classes, performing the proposed activities, marks to written tests about specific points proposed to the student, etc. Mark corresponding to this part will be maintained only for the ongoing academic course.

5. For the 2º call, only the theoretical exam needs to be done. Maximum mark for the qualification of this exam as well as the minimum required to pass are the same as for the 1st call.

6. The student must obtain five points over a total of ten to pass the subject.

7. The evaluation of the competences acquired in the subject will be done in the following ways:

Recommendations for evaluation:

The student must avoid simply memorizing the material, since it is neither adequate nor sufficient. Instead, the student should focusing the study the material to achieve an understanding of the material, allowing for reasoning and seeing the relationship of the contents of the subject.

Regarding interactive classes: active participation in them will allow the student a better understanding of many of the aspects explained in the theoretical classes, which will facilitate studying for the final exam.

The use of USC virtual platform is also highly recommended since students can ask their questions directly to the teacher via email. On this page will also be included materials such as outlines, summaries, problems or questions that help students to pass the subject.


Recommendations for Recovery:

Students are encouraged to attend the exam review where the teacher can explain what were the errors and to overcome them and in which parts of the subject must make a greater effort towards recovery.

It is also helpful to the student try to resolve all issues that have been proposed during the course, as well as those contained in the recommended bibliography and go to tutorials to answer all questions with the help of the teacher
