Know, understand and use the principles of environmental engineering and landscaping; landscaping principles; projects for environmental and landscape restoration; plans projects and maintenance of green areas; basis of the technology of ornamental propagation and production.
These contents will be developed according to the following program:
Program theory
Block I. Integrated management of urban trees:
1. Tree biology tree; Introduction to the system of the tree; tree defense mechanisms; weak joints; injuries; energy. (3 hours)
2. Hazards trees; Early evaluation and maintenance of hazardous trees; introduction to the danger; principles of biomechanics; manifestations. (4 hours)
of fractures in trees; Strategies of fungal decay in wood; main species of fungi wood decay; procedures for hazard and risk assessing; visual tree assessment (VTA); American method; unpredictable fractures; Remedial actions.
3. Prevention of hazards; species selection; design; plant vegetable quality material; tree planting and establishment; the pruning in relation to hazard. (3 hours)
4. Plans for comprehensive management of urban trees; inventories and GIS; ornamental rating; legal considerations of urban tress and gardens. (1 hour)
Block II. Management plans and maintenance of green areas:
5. The importance of management of green areas; current situation; management systems; strategic plans; the gardening and landscaping professional associations. (3 hours)
6. Plan maintenance management; objectives; conservation work: Lawns and meadows, plantations, roads and special areas street furniture; production units; returns; conservation levels; differentiated maintenance; the quality of conservation; security in playgrounds. (3 hours)
7. The supply of maintenance; tenders; documentation; assessment of resources: human and material; contracts act public sector; state collective agreement gardening. (3 hours)
Block III. Production of ornamental woody plant:
8. Planning the nursery; location of the nursery; organization and development; legislation; Codes; nursery stock. (1 hour)
9. Production of nursery stock; specific techniques of propagation and production of ornamental woody plant; field production; container production; environmental management and fertilization; irrigation systems; modification of the growth and development of the nursery stock plant; control of adventitious plants, pests and diseases. (3 hours)
Practical Program:
1. Conduct an inventory of urban trees. Students will perform measurements of the specimens to inventory using the necessary instruments. The recorded data will be analyzed by biodiversity criteria (representation by species classification, groups diameter); graphical representation of the recorded data. (2 hours)
2. Visual tree assessment. Several selected species will be assessed in accordance with the methodology proposed in the VTA method (Mattheck and Breoler, 1994). Field data will be recorded on the appropriate tab for each individual. (2 hours)
3. Implementation of the American method. Hazard score of several selected species is calculated using the methodology proposed by Matheny and Clark (1994). The study will be reflected in the corresponding report. (2 hours)
4. Valuation of ornamental trees: students must perform a valuation report of several ornamental trees using Norma Granada method. The format of the work is an expert report so they become familiar with the drafting of documents professionals with a high level of demand in the drafting, presentation and justification of the decisions taken. (2 hours)
5. Planning and management of maintenance of green areas: students must submit a management plan specifying a green operations to be performed, frequency, time, duration and material and human resources. For this they are provided with the actual tender documents for the maintenance of a green area: Technical Specification, statement of administrative requirements, inventories and planes. In addition to applying the knowledge of maintenance management, students become familiar with the use of actual documentation and legislation such as the EN-1176 and EN-1177, Royal Decree Law 3/2011 on Public Sector Contracts and the Collective Agreement Garden State. Specific skills:
CEG1 - In this competition works in this subject specifically: the ability for the preparation, design, drafting and signing, projects aimed at gardening and landscaping (urban green spaces and / or rural, parks, gardens, nurseries, urban trees, etc., public and private sports facilities and landscape environments subject to recovery).
CEG2 - Adequate knowledge of physical problems, technologies, machinery and systems for water and energy supply, limits imposed by cost factors and building regulations, and relationships between facilities or buildings and spaces related to gardening and landscaping with their social and environmental surroundings as well as the need to relate those and the environment preserving human and environmental needs.
CEG4 - In this competition works in this subject specifically: the ability for the drafting and signing of measurements, segregation, subdivisions, valuations and appraisals within the spaces related to gardening and landscaping, with and without character of reports expert for judicial or administrative bodies, regardless of the intended use to which the movable or immovable property subject to the same.
CEG5 - In this competition works in this subject specifically: the ability for writing and signing of studies related to gardening and landscape.
Other aspects of the above competencies are addressed in other subjects.
CEG6 - Capacity for leadership and management of urban and / or rural green spaces, and public or private sports facilities.
HJ6 - Ability to recognize, understand and use the principles of environmental engineering and landscape.
HJ8 -of this competition in this subject works specifically the ability to recognize, understand and use the plant material: production, use and maintenance; principles of landscape; specific design tools and graphic expression; environmental restoration projects and landscape; projects and plan maintenance of green areas.
The subject is quarterly. The theoretical part is taught in master classes, during the first semester of the course, and the basic contents are explained. The subject is complemented through the virtual campus of the USC. The practices carried out during the course, and of a mandatory nature, help the student to understand the theory explained. The practical work that must be done during the course reinforces the learning of the subject. Field practices are carried out. A practical trip is proposed to know in situ the operation of an ornamental plant nursery, and the variety and quality of ornamental plant available. The trip is optional and does not affect the evaluation.

Students will be assessed by one single exam at the end of the first semester and / or oral presentation of work done during the semester to pass the subject. Practices are mandatory. Students must submit a report containing the practical work and the results obtained. Students will perform the practical works to be determined during the course. In case of failing a part of the subject, the passed part will be kept for one academic year.
To pass the subject, it will be necessary to obtain a minimum average grade of 5.0. The aspects that will be taken into account in the evaluation of the student and the weight that they will have in the final grade will be the following: the contents of the subject by means of a written exam will count 30% and another 40% for the presentation and defense of the individual work. You reports of practices and group work will count 30%. Those students who have at least 80% class attendance may be exempt from the written exam, in this case the maximum grade will be 7.0.
The requirements to pass the subject in the second opportunity will be the same as for the first opportunity. The students who repeat will not have to do the practices again or the first year. In case of failing a second time, they will repeat the entire subject. In case of failing a part of the subject, the passed part will be kept for one academic year.
The weights of each party in the final grade, and the competencies evaluated are summarized below:
-Oral and / or written test (30%): skills CG1, CT1, CT2, CT12, CEG2, CEG6, HJ8
-Practices (30%): skills CG4, CT4, CEG4, CEG5, CEG6
-Individual work delivered and exposed (40%): skills CT3, CT5, CT6, CT7, CT8, CT9, CT10, CEG1, CEG2, CEG5, HJ8
Students who are exempt from attendance at any of the teaching activities scheduled for work or family conciliation, will have to comply with the provisions of Instruction 1/2017 of the General Secretariat. In these cases, to pass this subject, attendance at the practical activities that are indicated in the class schedule and programmed in the Teaching Guide is mandatory.
The actions of the professors of the subject will be governed, in any case, by the Norm of evaluation of the academic performance of the students and of revision of qualifications of the USC, approved in the Council of Government of June 15, 2011 (DOG 21 July 2011) and modified by the Resolution of April 5, 2017 (DOG, May 8).
In cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the Regulations for the evaluation of the academic performance of students and the review of grades will apply."
The subject is 4.5 credits ECTS, and the total number of hours are 112.5, which are divided among 41 classes and 71.5 of personal work.

Personal work:
A minimum dedication of 71.5 hours of personal work of the student is estimated, distributed in the study of the classroom and the preparation of the evaluation tests, the preparation of the individual work, and the elaboration of the reports of practices.
For the examination of the contents of the subject, it is important to review all the material since the tests address all the concepts covered during the semester. To fix concepts is very important the review and understanding of graphic schemes explained in the classroom and can be used in the evaluation tests to explore the student's knowledge.
In the realization of individual work and oral presentation to the class the following points are important:
1. A clear structure of work
2. Understand all concepts explained clearly to transmit and answer questions from peers and teacher.
3. The presentation of drawings and photographs is very important in this subject and can help to understanding of the work
4. Clearly indicate any bibliographic sources consulted for the performance of work.
