- Be able to solve professional problems related to Molecular Biosciences.
- Determine the most appropriate analytical or molecular technique for a situation or research objective.
- Know the fundamentals and applications of the main experimental methods and cutting-edge analytical and molecular techniques.
- Apply the knowledge acquired in the planning and implementation of research projects.
Block I: The analytical process. Fundamentals of the main analytical technologies.
* Different phases of the analytical process. Techniques for sample treatment. Selection of analysis methods.
* Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy: application to the analysis of biomolecules.
* Inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy: application to the analysis of biomolecules.
* Hybrid techniques for the study of biomolecules. GC-MS, HPLC-MS and ICP-MS. Application to proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomics.
Block II. Cutting-edge analytical and molecular technologies.
* Genomics (Next Generation Sequencing or NGS, high-throughput qPCR...).
* Transcriptomics (DNA microarrays, RNA-Seq, single-cell RNA-Seq, nanomaterials, RT-qPCR, hybridization
multiplexed nucleic acids…).
* Epigenomics (Hi-C, CHIP-Seq, ATAC-Seq, bisulfite sequencing...).
* Proteomics and metabolomics (Western blot, immunoprecipitation, electrophoresis, mass spectrometry,
NMR...).
* Other technologies (immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization of nucleic acids, metabolism and bioenergetics
real-time cellular, microscopy and imaging techniques, immunoassays/immunoanalysis, cytometry...)
* Genetic editing (CRISPR...)
All the necessary bibliographic materials and resources will be provided by each of the professors.
General and Basic Competences:
Comp04- That students have demonstrated how to apply theoretical-practical knowledge professionally and are competent in posing/solving problems in both academic and professional contexts related to Molecular Biosciences.
Comp05 - Collaborate in interdisciplinary teams in any work environment, based on knowledge of the environment and current legal regulations.
Comp06 - Develop the ability to learn autonomously with initiative and entrepreneurial spirit.
Con01 - Identify and relate the structure and applications of polymeric materials and nanomaterials with biomedical and agri-food applications.
Con03 - Know the foundations and applications of the main advanced experimental methods and cutting-edge analytical and molecular techniques used in the field of study of Molecular Biosciences.
Con04 - Determine the most appropriate analytical or molecular technique (workflow) for a given situation or research objective, in the field of biochemistry and biotechnology.
Con06 - Understand the molecular techniques used in the diagnosis and therapeutic approach of various diseases, with emphasis on all those molecular, genetic, and cellular techniques, typical of the so-called personalized medicine.
H/D01- Evaluate how to design and characterize the most relevant properties for the application and functionality of materials in biomedicine and food.
H/D03 - Ability to design and carry out experiments using advanced instrumental techniques, applying regulations and techniques related to safety and hygiene, waste management, and quality.
H/D04 - Use advanced tools of information and communication technologies (ICT's) to produce and evaluate the results generated within the scope of work.
H/D06 - Interpret experimental results and identify consistent and inconsistent elements.
H/D08 - Apply the knowledge acquired in the planning and implementation of research projects.
H/D09 - Adequately apply the knowledge and techniques acquired to analyze a complex situation or concept and find a way to solve it.
Transversal competences common to all degrees at USC:
Informational competences: identifying information needs, knowing the main types of scientific and technical documents, learning how to search and get information sources and select information, and using it in an ethical and legal manner.
For the correct acquisition of skills, the following general set of methodologies has been adopted:
1st) Expository teaching.
2nd) Interactive teaching: practices, problem-solving and/or practical cases, visits to companies and facilities, seminars, tutorials in small groups, Virtual Campus.
3rd) Realization of works: Individual or group works (without or with an exhibition).
4th) Oral presentations on previously prepared topics, including debates with peers and professors
5th) Individual tutorials.
The evaluation process will consist of:
- Practices 40%
Assessed skills: Comp04, Comp06, Con04, H/D01, H/D03, H/D04, H/D06
- Works 30%
Assessed skills: Comp05, Con04, Con06, Con01, H/D01, H/D06, H/D08, H/D09
- Continuous evaluation (attendance to classes, active participation in seminars and tutorials): 30%
Assessed skills: Comp06, Con04, Con06, Con03, H/D06, H/D08, H/D09
Final Score= (0,5xGrade of Block I + 0,5xGrade of Block II)
The final grade corresponds to the average grade of the subject content related to each of the two blocks (Block I and Block II), obtained according to the criteria described above. To pass the course, a grade of 5 must be obtained in each of the blocks
Those students who get a 5 will have passed the subject.
Those students who do not reach 5 and have at least a 3 must take a written exam.
Students who have less than a 3 will have the subject failed and will not be able to take the exam.
Those students who wish to improve their grades may also take the exam.
Important: "In cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the" Regulations for evaluating the academic performance of students and reviewing grades "will apply.
