Doctoral Programme in Cultural Studies: Memories, Identities, Territories and Language

• Admission profile

  The admission profile establishes the knowledge, skills and abilities that students wishing to access this programme must possess and, consequently, the most suitable entrance qualifications for the programme, which determine admission and, where appropriate, whether or not PhD students need to undertake further training.
  Applicants for this PhD student programme will be assessed on the basis of the qualifications required for admission to the programme, requiring them to be from the branches of the Humanities or Social Sciences, preferably related to the following fields of knowledge (cf. Annex I of RD822/2021)
  - Gender studies and feminist studies.
  - Philology, classical studies, translation and linguistics.
  - History of art and artistic expression, and fine arts.
  - History, archaeology, geography, philosophy and humanities.
  - Cultural industries: design, animation, cinematography and audiovisual production.
  - Interdisciplinary

• Requirements

  Access

  The general access and admission requirements are those set out in Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official PhD studies, and as amended by Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4 July. These are:
  1. In general, in order to access an official PhD programme, it shall be necessary to hold an official Spanish Bachelor´s degree, or equivalent, and a Master´s degree or equivalent, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been obtained in these two courses as a whole.
  2. Access may also be granted to those who are in one of the following situations:
  a) To hold official university degrees or equivalent Spanish degrees, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been passed in these courses as a whole, and accredit a level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
  b) To hold a degree obtained in accordance with foreign education systems belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for homologation, which accredits a level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, provided that this degree entitles access to PhD studies in the country of issue of the same. This admission shall not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested party nor its recognition for purposes other than access to PhD studies.
  c) To hold a degree obtained in accordance with foreign education systems outside the EHEA, without the need for its recognition, after verification by the university that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish university Master´s degree and that it entitles the holder to access PhD studies in the country in which the degree was awarded. This admission shall not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested party, nor its recognition for purposes other than that of access to PhD studies.
  d) To hold another PhD or Doctorate degree.
  e) Likewise, university graduates who, after obtaining a place in training in the corresponding entrance examination to specialised health training posts, have passed with a positive evaluation at least two years of training in a programme for obtaining the official qualification in one of the specialities in Health Sciences, may also be admitted.

• Specific requirements

  The following are compulsory requirements for admission to the doctoral programme:
  1) All students must present a research proposal, adjusted to one of the 4 lines of the programme, and sufficiently developed to be able to assess its suitability at the time of admission.
  2) They must also present a letter from a PhD professor of the programme or, failing that, from any other university, but duly accredited, which endorses the potential and viability of the future thesis within the framework of a line of research of the programme to which it is linked.
  3) Given the characteristics and scientific level of the PhD programme, the student must have a minimum level of knowledge of one of the three languages of communication of the programme (Spanish, Galician or Portuguese) equivalent to level B1. The language level in one of these languages will be accredited with the corresponding official certification of those included in the list of accreditations recognised by the USC for the different levels of the Common European Framework: https://www.usc.gal/es/centro/centro-lenguas-modernas.

• Admission rules

  Students will be selected for admission to the programme on the basis of the following criteria:
  * Academic record (grades obtained in the degree(s) of access to the programme (bachelor’s degree and master’s degree): up to 40%.
  * Thesis project and motivation letter: up to 20%.
  * Experiencia investigadora (publicaciones, comunicaciones, estancias, otros): hasta 15%
  * Professional experience: up to 10%.
  * Other merits (courses, grants and contracts, attendance at congresses, other qualifications, languages other than mother tongue and access to the programme): up to 15%.
  The same criteria will be applied to all students regardless of whether they are full-time or part-time.

• Title extinction

  El programa de doctorado podrá extinguirse por alguna de las siguientes causas:

  Que no supere el proceso de renovación de la acreditación establecido en el artículo 10 del RD 99/2011.

  • Que no acredite el cumplimiento de los requisitos establecidos por la normativa estatal o autonómica vigente.

  • Que se formule una propuesta de extinción del programa al amparo de los procesos de revisión y mejora del título de acuerdo con el procedimiento aprobado por la universidad.

  • Que concurra cualquier situación excepcional que impida el correcto desarrollo del programa de doctorado.

  La extinción producirá los siguientes efectos:

  • Comportará la pérdida de su carácter oficial y la baja en el RUCT.

  • No se podrá matricular nuevo estudiantado en el programa de doctorado.

  • En cualquier caso todo el estudiantado afectado deberá ser informado de la extinción y de las consecuencias en lo relativo al desarrollo de sus estudios.

  La Universidad adoptará las medidas necesarias para garantizar los derechos académicos del estudiantado que esté cursando dichos estudios en los términos establecidos en la resolución de extinción del plan de estudio, y aprobará el procedimiento de extinción de los programas de doctorado en el seno de la universidad.

• Other competencies

  - To learn to master the main models of critical, social and cultural theory applied to cultural processes.
  - To know the methods and techniques of ethnographic, literary, linguistic, philosophical and sociological research applied to intercultural phenomena.
  - To learn to work in interdisciplinary teams on the socio-economic applications and problems of cultural design.
  - To learn to design international cooperation programmes on human rights.

With regard to the professional opportunities detected, and taking into account the data and estimates included in this report, we can affirm that the employment opportunities for new PhD graduates are in line with the current socio-economic and cultural context. The preferred fields of employment point towards university teaching and research. In this sense, the cases of incorporation into university teaching are significant, taking advantage of the vacancies arising from the strong ageing of the teaching staff working in the current universities. In any case, the technical profile of the new PhD graduates is fundamentally humanistic, which allows them to gain access, preferably, to positions related to cultural management and heritage, fields of knowledge and research that are of special interest in this doctoral programme. In any case, it should be noted that the academic committee of this programme is committed to taking into account the job placement indicators provided by the USC and other entities in order to improve the quality of the contents and training actions of the study plan of this programme.

The main objective of this Masters degree is to train professionals and researchers in aquaculture; professionals with a solid recognised training at job level and researchers whose training allows them to carry out their research, with cutting-edge technologies, while keeping abreast of problems in production processing.
