Tutelary Practices V

The subject Tutored Practicals V aims at the acquisition of competences by students to provide nursing care in special situations involving a high level of complexity, such as the care of patients admitted to so-called special units such as critical care units, emergency rooms, operating theatres, haemodialysis, psychiatry, primary health care centres, etc.
The competences for the subject of clinical practice are set out below:
- Basic competences:
o CB2. Students know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional manner and possess the competences that are usually demonstrated through the elaboration and defence of arguments and the resolution of problems within their area of study;
o CB3. Students have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (usually within their field of study) in order to make judgements that include reflection on relevant social, scientific or ethical issues;
o CB4. Students are able to convey information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- General competences:
o CG1. To be able, in the field of nursing, to provide technical and professional health care appropriate to the health needs of the people they care for, in accordance with the state of development of scientific knowledge at any given time and with the levels of quality and safety established in the applicable legal and deontological standards.
o GC2. Plan and provide nursing care aimed at individuals, families or groups, oriented towards health outcomes, assessing their impact, through clinical and care practice guidelines, which describe the processes by which a health problem is diagnosed, treated or cared for.
o GC5. Design care systems aimed at individuals, families or groups, assessing their impact and establishing the appropriate modifications.
o GC6. Base nursing interventions on scientific evidence and available means.
o GC7. Understand people without prejudice, considering their physical, psychological and social aspects, as autonomous and independent individuals, ensuring respect for their opinions, beliefs and values, guaranteeing the right to privacy, through confidentiality and professional secrecy.
o GC8. Promote and respect the right to participation, information, autonomy and informed consent in the decision making of the people cared for, in accordance with the way in which they live their health-illness process.
o GC11. Establish effective communication with patients, family, social groups and colleagues and promote health education.
o GC15. Work with the team of professionals as a basic unit in which the professionals and other staff of healthcare organisations are structured in a uni or multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary way.

The expected learning outcomes will consist of students incorporating professional values, care communication competences, clinical reasoning, clinical management and critical judgement,
clinical reasoning, clinical management and critical judgement, integrating into professional practice the knowledge, skills and attitudes of Nursing, based on principles and values, associated with the competences described in the general objectives and in the subjects that make up the Degree.

Nursing care action plan carried out in centers and devices of the Galician Public Health System in order to acquire the skills and progressively achieve the indicated results (objectives).

- Nursing care in the field of critical care

- Nursing care in the community setting.
Comprehensive nursing care for the individual, family and community.
Nursing functions in the Primary Care Team, Community Participation, Health Programs.
Nursing consultation: adult and pediatric population
Home visit
Realization of basic sanitary techniques

- Nursing care in the field of psychiatric care.

Specific protocols of the different units of the University Hospital Complex of Santiago de Compostela (CHUS) and the primary care centers where the training periods take place.

In accordance with the provisions of the annex to THE ORDER CIN/2134/2008 of July 3, if they establish the requirements for the verification of the Univesitarios Oficiais Titles that enable the exercise of the profession of Enfermeiro, the Objectives-Competencies that students must acquire in relation to the GuardianShip Practices are:

The subject Tutored Practicals V will allow students to acquire competences by means of clinical practicals, solving practical cases and tutorials (personalised attention).
- Clinical practicals.
This is a fundamental element in the development of professional competences in health sciences.
The clinical practicals will be carried out in the health centres dependent on the Galician Health Service and are detailed below:
- Santiago de Compostela-Barbanza Health Area.
o University Clinical Hospital
o Conxo Medical-Surgical Hospital.
o Gil Casares Hospital
o Conxo Psychiatric Hospital
o Barbanza Hospital
o Health Centres corresponding to the health area of Santiago de Compostela-Barbanza.
Students in the 4th year of the Degree, by default, will carry out the PT in the Santiago Compostela-Barbanza Health Area. In addition, a limited number of places will be offered in the rest of the Health Areas of the Autonomous Community, subject to prior authorisation by the "Axencia de Coñecemento en Saúde" (ACIS).
On the first day of the placement in each of the different units where students will have to rotate, the Associate Professor of Health Sciences (PACS), or failing this, a teaching collaborator designated by him/her, will be in charge of receiving the new students, in order to, among other things, explain the basic functioning of the unit as well as the rules relating to the rotation (attendance, evaluation criteria, etc.).

- Resolution of clinical cases.
The PACS responsible for tutoring students in their respective units may ask students to solve practical cases in order to facilitate the teaching-learning process and/or assess the competences acquired during the training period.
- Tutoring.
Personalised attention so that students can raise any problems or difficulties they encounter in the acquisition of competences.

The PACS, in close communication with the teaching collaborators, will issue an evaluation report based on the degree of fulfilment of the competences-skills that the students must acquire during the training period in each of the destinations, both primary care and specialised care, where the students will develop their training.
The evaluation will take into consideration compliance with the rules for the development of the internship, consisting of:
- Attendance and punctuality
- Appropriate working attire
- Professional secrecy and confidentiality.
The competences that are subject to assessment are detailed in the assessment sheets corresponding to each of the units where the student carries out the training period. The assessment sheets are available to students in the Tutored Work Placement guide published on the Faculty's website.
In addition, the PACS or teaching collaborator responsible for student assessment in each of the units may request a report on the most important aspects of the rotation related to the learning objectives.
The results obtained will be graded according to the following numerical scale from 0 to 10, in accordance with the degree of mastery achieved:
- Grade 1 =Failure (0-4.9)
No effort is made to acquire the competence and does not demonstrate that the competence has been acquired or is rarely acquired.
- Grade 2 = Pass (5-6.9)
Studies, trains and demonstrates that he/she sometimes applies the competence.
- Grade 3 = Pass (7-8,9)
Has learnt the competence and his/her behaviour shows that he/she applies it.
- Grade 4 = Outstanding / Honours (9-10)
Has integrated the competence into his/her behavioural habits.

Attendance is compulsory. Absences must be justified in writing within ten days of the end of the process or cause that prevented the student from attending the internship.
- Justified cause: the justification will be made by presenting the accrediting document to the PACS and does not exempt from the recovery. The dates and times for make-up will be agreed with the PACS.
- Unexcused cause: unexcused absences constitute a reason for failing the subject.
Excused absences are included in the regulations for class attendance in courses adapted to the European Higher Education Area approved by the "Consello de Goberno da USC do 25 de marzo de 2010".
The periods of recovery of the internships not carried out will be established according to the possibilities of each Centre. During the internship the student will not be able to be absent from the internship without a justified cause or without the authorisation of the responsible teacher.
- Causes for negative assessment:
1. Failure to achieve the established training objectives, due to learning difficulties that can be recovered.
2. Unexcused absences.
3. Failure to comply with the following basic rules:
- Compulsory identification: the student must attend the placement with the identification card visible; the card will be requested from the Concierge of the Faculty of Nursing.
- Compliance with the rules established in the assigned care centre.
- Timetable: punctuality is required and, in agreement with the lecturer in charge, adequate rest time will be agreed during the day of the placement.
- Work clothes: pyjamas or white coat and appropriate footwear.
- Relationships: respectful treatment of the patient, family and care team.
- Observance of professional secrecy and confidentiality of data.

4. Study time and personal work
The subject Tutored Practice V has a teaching load of 30 ECTS credits, equivalent to 750 hours of work for the student.
Each ECTS credit is equivalent to 25 hours of work, distributed as shown in table 1.

Note: The data provided in the table are indicative and may undergo modifications in order to adapt the teaching methodology to the specific characteristics of each unit or department where the student will be trained.

The subject Protected Practices V has a legal burden of 30 ECTS credits, equivalent to 750 hours of work.
Correspond 25 hours for each ECTS credit

- For the proper development of the rotations in the different units, students will present themselves at the health centre wearing the corresponding uniform and carrying the university card that identifies them as students of the Faculty of Nursing of the USC in a visible place.
- Entry and exit times will be respected.
- Responsibility and Confidentiality:
o Before starting the rotation it is necessary to have completed the identification card and to have signed the confidentiality commitment, available at the concierge desk of the Faculty of Nursing, of the Roberto Novoa Santos teaching building and on the website of the Faculty of Nursing dedicated to Supervised Internships https://www.usc.es/es/centros/enfermaria_stgo/practicastuteladas.html
o Students are responsible for the careful use of the equipment they are using, and must collaborate in the collection and cleaning of all materials used in the placement; in the case of using electrical appliances, the safety rules for their correct use (connection and disconnection) must be followed.
- A negative certificate of sexual offences must be presented.
- Students must have updated their vaccination schedule before starting the clinical practice. Otherwise, they must be assessed by the Preventive Medicine service of the hospital complex.
The placements will be carried out in accordance with the organisation of each unit or service and students will adapt to the different work shifts:
- fixed shift: placements are always carried out on the same shift, morning or afternoon.
- simple rotating shift: during the work placement period there are morning and afternoon shifts. Occasionally there may be a night shift.
- complex rotating shift: during the practical period, there are morning, afternoon and evening shifts.
The duration of the shift is variable, depending on the rotation and the organisation of each unit and/or situations arising from exceptional circumstances. As far as possible, students will be notified in good time of such changes.
