Summary
Introduction and objectives: Historically, the main trading partner for Latin America has been the United States. The emergence of China as one of the main powers in the world along with the United States is forced to look for new trading partners in other regions. To satisfy its growing industry, in the absence of the necessary raw materials, in addition to other strategic and geopolitical factors, China seeks to become the main trading partner of Latin American countries. This research seeks to answer the following question: How have the trade relations of the main Latin American economies with the United States and China evolved? Material and methods: This is a quantitative analysis of trade relations between China and the seven main economies of Latin American countries during the years 2000 to 2022 through the collection of data on exports and imports, comparing them with those of the United States. Results: The results obtained show a clear growth in trade with China, becoming the second trading partner in the Latin American region. However, the United States remains the main partner for several Latin American economies, having already been displaced to second place in the cases of Chile, Peru and Brazil. The variables used in the research reflect the high percentage that exports to the United States and China represent in the GDP of Latin American economies. Conclusions: It was possible to determine the importance of both China and the United States as Latin American trading partners for the economies of these countries, this is reflected in the total percentage of exports and imports, as well as in the GDP of each of their economies.
